Surface Preparation

Remove all dirt, dust and loose debris from the surface area where the tile will be installed. Dampen porous areas with clean water, but do not saturate.

Mixing

Use clean, cool water, clean pail and power mixer. Mix dry powder into water, if using power mixer, do not exceed 150 rpm. A 10 lb (4.5 kg) amount requires approximately 1 qt (1 L) of water. Mix to a lump free, trowelable consistency. Allow mixture to set for 5 minutes, then remix prior to using. Approximate usable time is 1 hour (inside mixing container).

Desired consistency: ridges formed in the mortar will not flow or slump.

Temperature

Apply to surfaces that are frost-free and will be above 50° F (10° C) for 72 hours. For exterior use, do not apply if rain is expected in the next 24 hours.

DO NOT USE ADDITIVES.

Application

  • Spread a thin coat of mortar about 1/8” (3 mm) thick over a small area of the surface, about 3 to 4 sq. ft. (0.3 to 0.4 m2). Use the flat side of the trowel.
  • Immediately follow with a heavier coat and comb using the notched side of the trowel at a 45° angle, approximately 1/4” (60 mm) thick for walls and countertops and 3/8” (90 mm) thick for floors.
  • Place tile into mortar within 10 minutes of combing.
  • Tap the tiles into place with a rubber mallet or hammer and soft wood block.
  • Check alignment, spacing and level.
  • Wait 24 hours prior to grouting walls and countertops and 48 hours before grouting floors.
